Lot 1055
Forces of Galba in Spain. In the name of Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.44 g, 5 h), uncertain mint in Spain. Group A.VI, 3 April-2nd half of June 68. [CAESAR] AVGVSTVS Bare head of Augustus to right. Rev. S•P•Q•R / OB•C•S in two lines on round shield. BMC p. 303, ‡ = Cohen 296 = Martin A 35 = RIC 108 note. CG 178.1 (this coin). Nicolas -. Of the highest rarity, either unique or the second known example. Faint scratches and the obverse struck off center, otherwise, nearly fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, ex Herrero, 8 May 2013, 230.

The only reference to this type comes from Cohen, who described a similar coin in the possession of M. Delgado. Unfortunately, no image of said coin exists and it is thus impossible to tell whether it is identical to ours. In any case, the coin is certainly of Spanish origin; it was struck in good silver, and its fine portrait shows some stylistic similarities to the Divus Augustus aurei (see lot 1056 below).
